At Safety Bay Senior High School, we are proud to share the talents and achievements of our community – from staff and students, to family members and wider community members. Tara Pratt is no exception to this. Tara is not just a proud member of our Safety Bay Humanities and Social Sciences teaching staff and a favourite among students, but she is also a National Champion in competitive Weightlifting.
Tara has been weightlifting for five years, and takes up coaching the sport when she has spare time away from school. In the past, we have shared many of Tara’s career highlights on our school social media pages.
In June 2022, Tara qualified at a local competition to attend the Australian Weightlifting Federation National Championships at the Australian Institute of Sport to defend her National title. Prior to this, she had won the title 3 years in a row and unfortunately only just missed out on qualifying for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, for reasons out of her control. At the Championships in November 2022, Tara took out the +87kg category and finished with a best of 90kig in the Snatch, and 120kg in the Clean and Jerk – finishing with 210kg in total.
Recently, in June 2023, Tara punched a ticket to Nationals once again through competing at the State Championships. In order to qualify, athletes were required to achieve the Qualifying Total (combined weight of Snatch and Clean and Jerk). Tara will attend Nationals in Melbourne at VWA Stadium in August, later this year.
Tara states: “I like to approach every big competition as though it’s another training day. The hard work has been done, the platform is the time to execute and show them. Much like your efforts at school, what counts is the work you put in every day, not only the performance on the day.”
